Blackjack Card Values Explained
Blackjack card values are simple, but the ace makes the game strategically interesting. Once you understand number cards, face cards, and soft totals, the rest of beginner blackjack becomes much easier.

Number cards and face cards
Cards 2 through 10 count as their printed value. Jacks, queens, and kings all count as 10.
Because there are many 10-value cards, totals like 10 and 11 often become strong doubling hands, and dealer 10 is a powerful upcard.
Aces can count as 1 or 11
An ace counts as 11 when that helps the hand without busting. It counts as 1 when 11 would push the total over 21.
This flexibility creates soft hands. A,6 is soft 17 because the ace can still shift down if needed.
Natural blackjack is a special two-card hand
A natural blackjack is an ace plus a 10-value card as the first two cards. It is different from reaching 21 with three or more cards.
Knowing this distinction helps beginners understand why card values are more than arithmetic. Starting shape matters.
