How to Count Cards in Blackjack: Learn Hi-Lo Step by Step

Card counting tracks how exposed cards change the composition of the undealt shoe. Start with three Hi-Lo tags, maintain a running count, then divide by decks remaining to find the true count.

The short answer

Count composition, not cards by name.

Card counting does not memorize every card and does not reveal the next card. A system assigns small values to exposed ranks, keeps their cumulative running total, and uses that total as a compact description of the cards still undealt.

Card tag

The +1, 0, or -1 value assigned to an exposed rank by Hi-Lo.

Running count

The cumulative tag total since the current shoe was shuffled.

True count

The running count divided by estimated decks remaining.

The underlying idea

Dealt cards change the undealt shoe.

Blackjack cards are normally dealt from a finite deck or multi-deck shoe. When exposed cards are not immediately returned and reshuffled, removing one rank changes the proportions of the cards that remain. Edward O. Thorp's early mathematical work showed that this changing information could support composition-dependent strategy.

Known cards leave the undealt group without replacement.

Composition shifts

The count summarizes the high-to-low imbalance that remains.

The information lasts only until the shuffle. A new randomized shoe starts a new count at zero.

Three groups

The Hi-Lo card values are deliberately simple.

Hi-Lo is a balanced count. Across one complete 52-card deck, twenty low cards contribute +20, twenty high cards contribute -20, and twelve neutral cards contribute zero. The total returns to zero when every card has been seen.

Expresses the same imbalance on a per-deck scale so a count early in a shoe can be compared with a count late in a shoe.

+6 running count / 3 decks remaining = +2 true count

The same +6 running count with six decks remaining is only +1 per remaining deck. Deck estimation is part of the calculation, not decoration.

It does not predict the next card

The count summarizes a composition imbalance. Any individual next card remains uncertain.

It does not replace basic strategy

A clean running count cannot repair incorrect hand decisions. Strategy remains the prerequisite skill.

It resets when the cards are shuffled

The count belongs to the current undealt shoe. A new shuffle removes the accumulated sequence information.

It does not guarantee a positive session

Expected value and short-term results are different. Random variation remains even when information improves.
